The Chamber was the place where parliamentary sessions were held. Important acts were passed here, such as the National Service Bill on 14 March 1967.

In 1955 while still under British rule, a 32-seat Legislative Assembly was set up in Singapore. Out of these 32 members, 25 were elected to the role, and the Assembly had more powers over Singapore's affairs.
