The Story

The box pops open, and lying neatly folded inside, is the National Flag.

"'1959', of course! It was the year Singapore attained full self-governance, you know." Inspector Kay grins broadly and keeps the flag safe. Both of you hurry to the next location.

The National Flag

Singapore's most visible symbol of statehood, Singapore's National Flag was created in 1959 as a symbol to replace the British flag after Singapore gained self-governance.

Each feature of the flag has symbolic meaning:

  • Red stands for universal brotherhood and equality of man.
  • White symbolises pervading and everlasting purity and virtue.
  • The crescent moon represents a young nation on the ascendant.
  • The five stars depict Singapore's ideals of democracy, peace, progress, justice and equality.
