Gelam Tree

Kampong Gelam is thought to be named after the Gelam tree (Melaleuca cajuputi) that used to be common in this area. This tree is native to Singapore and has a distinct papery bark. It is the source of a medicinal oil called cajuput oil, and the timber is popular for use in carving, furniture and boat building. The tree is now extinct in the wilds of Singapore and can only be found cultivated in parks.

A note is pinned to the tree. It reads "6el4m Tree".

Leaning Minaret

The minaret of Masjid Hajjah Fatimah is designed in a European style, a distinct contrast with the Islamic dome on the prayer hall. The tower leans slightly (about six degrees off centre) due to the unstable sandy soil and shifting of the bricks used in the building.

Inspector Kay points out a small sign on the tower. With your binoculars, you can see it says "Mina2e7".

Masjid Hajjah Fatimah

The mosque is named after an aristocratic lady, Hajjah Fatimah, who commissioned its construction. Originally her residence, she donated the site after she survived a fire during a break-in. Masjid Hajjah Fatimah is Singapore's oldest mosque built in 1846, and is designed in a mix of Islamic and European architectural styles. Some Chinese features can also be seen in the mosque, such as in its windows and woodwork.

Someone has used a marker to write on this sign. The title is now "Masj1d Hajjah Fat1mah".

Beach Road

Beach Road is so named because up until the 1880s, the sea came right up to Beach Road! It is one of the earliest roads developed in Singapore, and appears in early British maps. It is now so far inland as land was reclaimed over the years.
