Records on the Wall

There are some records on the wall. These piring hitam (Malay language for records, meaning "black plates") were how music was popularly stored from as early as the 1800s till about the 1990s when compact discs (CDs) started to become popular. These records hanging on the wall are of some popular Malay songs from Singapore.

The Malay Music Industry

The Malay music industry grew with the rise of Malay film production in Singapore. Pioneering composers such as Zubir Said and P. Ramlee paved the way for a new wave of Malay music in Singapore and the region. Malay pop music had significant commercial appeal and thus the industry developed quickly with famous singers. You can hear some of this music in the record player in this room!

Leaflets and covers of popular music albums

Pinned to the wall are some old advertisements and record sleeve covers. These were soundtracks to popular Malay films in the 1960s! Also in the showcase are some magazines about Malay pop culture. The actual records are in the next display case.

Malay Musical Heritage

Traditional Malay music has influences from many different cultures, such as Indian, Arabic and Persian music and theatre. These cultural influences stemmed from the time that the Malay archipelago was a trade hub - Not only were goods exchanged then, cultural influences were also traded.

A Record Player

The gentle strains of music plays as Inspector Kay presses a button on a record player in the middle of the room. "These are some famous Malay pop songs from the 50s and 60s!" As you listen to the songs, you notice a record that is locked by a passcode.

The Way Out

The way out past the doors is once again blocked by a shimmering wall. When you touch it, a message floats before you.

A Familiar Sight

A music score lies in this display case. Inspector Kay looks over your shoulder and smiles. "Oh, that's a familiar sight," He says. It's the score to our National Anthem, Majulah Singapura, written by Zubir Said. You last saw it in your previous adventure with Inspector Kay.
